Sabaton – 20 Years

Where is this greatness I’ve been told? This is the lies that we been sold.”

Sabaton – Great War

This project is one of the bigger ones that I did this year so far. I’ve had some plans concerning a Sabaton drawing for quite some time and with the release of their new album „The Great War“ and their special anniversary show at Wacken coming up, I felt like it was finally time to start drawing. I wanted the artwork to be connected to both – Sabaton and Wacken – as I had my ticket for Wacken and was definitely planning to see their show. First, I wanted the band portrait to be based on live photos of the band playing but as I couldn’t find suitable references I decided to go with “standard promo pictures” instead. The ones that I found on Sabaton’s website were exactly what I had been looking for and so I started to arrange the photos of the single band members until I had a nice group constellation. The next part was a lengthy but relatively easy-going procedure: pencil portrait time! For the background, I used acrylic colours and painted another sheet of paper with them. To bring together portrait and background, I cut out the guys and carefully glued them onto the background which was the most stressful part of this artwork – at least emotionally – as I was terribly afraid of ruining the portrait by making a mistake while cutting. It all came to a good end, though, and you can barely see the cuts at all. For Wacken, I got my drawing printed on a large flag. I took the flag with me and we hissed it in our camp for the entire seven days of the festival.

I recorded almost the entire drawing process and made time-lapse videos that I uploaded to my YouTube channel, so if you’re interested in seeing how I worked feel free to head over there (the channel is called “Miss Escapist Art”, not much of a surprise, I know…).

Northward

“Don’t turn away
Mirrors never lie”

Northward – Storm in a Glass

As a big fan of Floor Jansen, I also follow all her projects aside from Nightwish. One of those projects is “Northward” where she created some nice hard rock together with Jorn Viggo Lofstad. I liked the music even more than I had expected myself to do and on a grey and rainy afternoon (while listening to Northward, of course) the beginning of this drawing was made. I started with a rough pencil sketch and then used a ballpoint pen for the rest of the drawing. I drew Floor first, followed by Viggo. In the beginning I didn’t really like the drawing but I kept on working on it and added details and shadings where necessary. Since my last ballpoint pen portrait, I had definitely managed to improve my skills and in the end the shading turned out to be quite smooth (at least for a ballpoint pen). I finished the portrait during my lunch break at university the next day by adding the trees. The drawing was quite successful after uploading it to social media, Northward saw and reposted it on all of their social media channels and I even had a private chat about that drawing with whomever is managing the Northward Instagram account

A New Powerwolf Portrait

“We are the sword we tame, the fire, the flame. We hail the lord, we fear no rebel, no pain.”

Powerwolf – Venom of Venus

When Powerwolf announced their new album “The Sacrament of Sin” and, additionally to that, released fantastic new photos of the band members, they literally left me without any choice. I just had to draw them again. This time I wanted to approach the “band portrait thing” from another angle, though. Instead of taking a photo of the entire band as a reference and copying it 1:1, I came up with a design that combined the 5 separate portraits in one artwork. I did a rough layout design on my PC first before I transferred that idea to paper. This time I was smart enough to actually start at the left side of the picture and so the first one to draw was Falk Maria, followed by Charles. Atilla, Matthew and Roel followed after that. For this portrait I spent a lot of time with trying to get all the different shades correct, making them look smooth and edgy at the same time. I really wanted to capture the essence of Powerwolf in that drawing, more than I had done in my previous portrait of them. Certainly, one of the artwork’s highlights is the gold paint on their clothes as it really stands out from the pencil drawing. I used two layers of paint to get the right intensity of gold. I made the bottom of the drawing entirely black, apart from the writing, as I hoped for a chance of getting the drawing signed by Powerwolf one day – I imagined them signing with a golden pen on that black area. Yes, I’d definitely like that.

Arch Enemy The Second

“Always keep on fighting my friend. There’s a reason to believe.”

Arch Enemy – Reason To Believe

Question 1: Have I already drawn Arch Enemy before? Yes. Question 2: Are there a ton of other bands whom I still need to draw? Yes. So the most logical thing would’ve been to just draw any other band, but nope. I ended up drawing Arch Enemy again. But I had a good excuse: I had a VIP ticket for their concert, so I’d be able to get another drawing signed there. A drawing that I didn’t even have yet. But there were still 3 weeks left to draw another band portrait – and that’s exactly what I did. This time I drew Alissa first and especially the details on her shirt took me a while to finish them. I continued drawing on Alissa’s right side, adding Michael and then Sharlee to the picture (I have this bad habit of starting somewhere in the centre or even on the right side of the picture, which leaves me working from right to left. As a right-handed person that’s kinda stupid but I’m always doing it again). Then I added Daniel and Jeff. At first, I left Daniels arm empty because I only had three days left until the concert and I wasn’t sure if I’d manage to finish the entire drawing in time. And I felt like drawing the background was a bit more important at that point as that would be the place where the signatures go. Luckily, I managed to finish the entire drawing in time – WITH Daniels tattoos.

Arch Enemy

“Feel the strength rise from within. If you really want it the world is yours.”

Arch Enemy – The World Is Yours

A few weeks before the release of “Will To Power” Arch Enemy announced a signing session in my home town. I was super excited about this because I saw a chance to show Alissa the drawings that I had made of her in person. And to get them signed, of course. However, I felt like it would’ve been a bit unfair to show up with a bunch of Alissa drawings without having a single drawing dedicated to the entire band. I mean, I love Alissa but I also love Arch Enemy as a band and I’m really into their music. So they deserved a band portrait anyways. I picked a picture from a promo shoot for their upcoming album as a reference and started drawing. First, I drew Michael, followed my Jeff. While Michael was done quite quickly, drawing Jeff consumed a bit more time (I’m not good when it comes to drawing light hair). I continued working on Sharlee and Daniel (whose tattoos took me ages and required a lot of patience) before I finally started drawing the lady in the centre. Luckily, I already had a lot of experience with drawing Alissa and so I didn’t struggle with depicting her. As a final touch, I decided to draw the background as well. After that, I was done with the portrait and all ready to get it signed by Arch Enemy.

Powerwolf

“Stand up all the night and call the fight, let your mind go wild before the light”

Powerwolf – Army Of The Night

After having bought myself a ticket for my very first Powerwolf show it felt just right to do a drawing dedicated to them. Powerwolf are one of my favourite bands and their music gives me a lot of energy so it was just about time to finally draw them. Until now I have only done “single portraits” – I never drew more than one person in the same picture. But for Powerwolf I really wanted to go with entire band instead of just choosing a single member to depict. As an A4 paper appeared to be too small to get all five of the wolves on it I decided to go with A3 paper instead – another challenge, as I wasn’t used to drawing on anything larger than A4. I started drawing the outlines of the entire band and then went on with shading and detailing form left to right, Falk-Maria being the first to draw and Matthew the last. I worked on the drawing for quite a while and as I drew I literally felt and saw the progress that I made. So, when I had reached the right end of the picture after finishing Matthew, I went back to the left side again to re-draw Falk-Maria and Charles. I went back and forth this way a few times until I was finally satisfied with the result. Which was a few days after the concert. I had intended to finish it before but late is better than never. And it was by far my most ambitious project of 2015, so I guess that’s okay.
